If you are the pet parent of a senior, large breed or overweight pup – or suffer from osteoarthritis yourself – you’ve most likely heard of glucosamine and chondroitin and their benefits for joint health.
About Glucosamine:
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in cartilage, and has been used orally to treat or prevent osteoarthritis. Not only does glucosamine act as a building block of cartilage, it also reduces the breakdown of joints and slows down the enzymes and inflammatory substances that negatively impact the joints.
*Fun fact - Glucosamine supplements are derived from the shells of shellfish and can be found in several forms including glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and N-acetyl glucosamine.
About Chondroitin Sulfate:
Chondroitin Sulfate is also a natural building block of cartilage, and supplementation with chondroitin sulfate can help rebuild cartilage. In contrast to glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate slows down the breakdown of collagen in the joints.
These two substances work together to decrease the breakdown and inhibit the enzymes and inflammatory mediators that cause joint issues, and typically work better together than either work on their own.
There are regulatory limits on the amount of glucosamine and chondroitin content allowed in a full feeding diet, but naturally occurring levels of these micronutrients can be found in the animal proteins and are present in most Tailored recipes.
Be sure to talk to your vet about whether the naturally occurring levels of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are sufficient for your pet. If higher levels are desired, they can be achieved through added supplementation.
