Large and lovable, content and cool headed, large breed dogs are often known as gentle giants, secure with their place in the world and extremely loyal to their parents. But with their large stature can come big health concerns. The good news is many of these possible issues can be controlled through a carefully managed diet.

3 Primary objectives of a Large Breed Adult food:

  • Provide appropriate levels of glucosamine & chondroitin to support joint health.
  • Lower calories to prevent obesity, which can cause undue joint stress.
  • Lower fat content to prevent bloat, or gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV).

A large breed formula that contains glucosamine, a naturally occurring compound that supports healthy joints and cartilagecan help nourish healthy joints. This, along with the vitamins and minerals in a complete and balanced adult canine diet may help support the production of cartilage.

There are regulatory limits to the glucosamine and chondroitin content of a full feeding diet, but naturally occurring levels of these micronutrients can be found in the animal protein meals used to formulate these diets. It’s important to note that, while these levels may impart some of the beneficial cartilage-sparing or chondroprotective effects, they are not considered therapeutic. If you feel your pet might need additional joint support, talk to your veterinarian about additional supplementation.

To minimize joint stress, it is important to keep your large breed dog at a healthy weight. This is best accomplished by controlling calorie intake. Large breed adult foods should have a lower caloric density than a typical adult food, and a diet containing 15% - 25% fewer calories is recommended.

Bloat is a very serious and sometimes fatal condition that occurs when gasses accumulate in the stomach rapidly and have no way to escapePreventative measures for this condition include feeding a food with a lower fat content and limiting rapid food consumption. This is often achieved by feeding multiple small meals each day.
